Museums to visit in Bilbao

Bilbao boasts a wide cultural offering, which includes over a dozen museums, on many different themes, and one of which is the Athletic Club Museum. Here are some museums we recommend visiting in Bilbao.

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

One of the main tourist attractions not only in Bilbao, but also in the whole of the Basque Country. Ever since it opened, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has engaged in purchasing works from the mid-20th century to the present day, which are exhibited alongside the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation; thank to which, it has forged its unique identity.

Over a million people visit this art gallery every year; its main features include the ArcelorMittal room, a large space where eight works of the famous sculptor Richard Serra are on permanent display.

Fine Arts Museum

The origin of this museum can be traced back to the first Fine Arts Museum, which was founded in 1908 and opened to the public in 1914, and the Modern Art Museum, opened in 1924. Both institutions, along with their respective collections, were merged in 1945.

The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum collection has over 19,000 works, including painting, sculptures, works on paper and applied arts; it ranges in time from the 12th century to the present day, with important examples of ancient, modern and contemporary art.

Itsasmuseum Bilbao

The collection of the Bilbao Maritime Museum, Itsasmuseum is housed in the former premises of the Euskalduna shipyards; it is made up of articles and items related to the maritime activity of the Bilbao river estuary, its port, and to the maritime culture, in general.

Its highlights include the ships exhibited on the Museum’s quays, along with the collection of models of the vessels built at its famed shipyards of yesteryear along the Bilbao river estuary.

Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum (Arkeologi Museoa) opened its current premises in the Casco Viejo (Old Town) of Bilbao in 2008. It seeks to promote knowledge of the history of Bizkaia, by connecting the past to the present.

The exhibition area is over two floors and showcases the history of Bizkaia through the traces left by its inhabitants from prehistoric to recent times. The museum also ensures the safekeeping, conservation and restoration of archaeological materials.

AC Museoa

The Athletic Club Museum, AC Museoa, is another of the museums to visit in Bilbao. Its collection consists of over 1,000 original items and videos to immerse you in the essence of the “rojiblanco” as the team is known. Visitors can also go on the  San Mamés Tour around the stadium known as the Cathedral of football.

In short, AC Museoa is a unique way to learn what the Athletic Club means and about its history. One of the best plans for the family if you are in Bilbao. Book your visit to the Athletic Club Museum.
