What to do in Bilbao: must-do plans and restaurants

Bilbao is a city full of life, culture and flavours. It is the perfect destination to enjoy thanks to its combination of modernity, history and cuisine that delights any palate, offering plans for all tastes.

Here is a guide to the essential places and activities to make the most of your stay in the capital of Biscay, including an unforgettable gastronomic experience at San Mamés Jatetxea.

1. A stroll through the Old Town

The historic heart of Bilbao is the Old Town, a labyrinth of charming pedestrian streets. Enjoy its nooks and crannies which lead to places such as the Plaza Nueva which is filled with terraces where you can enjoy a vermouth or some pintxos while watching the local hustle and bustle.

Visit the Seven Streets, explore its craft shops and step inside the Santiago Cathedral. In addition, markets such as La Ribera are perfect for sampling local products and immersing yourself in Basque gastronomic culture.

2. The Guggenheim, a cultural icon

No visit to Bilbao is complete without seeing the Guggenheim Museum. This iconic building designed by Frank Gehry attracts thousands of curious visitors every day, and its temporary exhibitions are a major draw.

Stroll along the estuary, admire sculptures such as Jeff Koons’ ‘Puppy’ and be amazed by the contrast between art and nature.

3. The estuary and its bridges

The Tidal River of Bilbao is the soul of the city and is a great place to explore on foot or by boat. Cross the Zubizuri Bridge, designed by Calatrava, and enjoy the panoramic views.

If you’re looking for a more ‘active’ family outing, hire some bicycles and cycle along the banks of the river. The sunsets by the estuary are magical, especially from the Uribitarte promenade.

4. Mount Artxanda

For the best panoramic view of the city, take the funicular up Mount Artxanda. From there, you’ll have spectacular views of Bilbao, perfect for photos.

It’s an ideal place to walk along its trails or simply relax in a natural setting.

5. Traditional Basque restaurant in San Mames Jatetxea

One of Bilbao’s gastronomic gems is San Mames Jatetxea, a restaurant located in the San Mamés stadium. Its menu is an ode to local flavours, with dishes such as cod al pil-pil, txangurro (spider crab) and hake in green sauce.

The atmosphere is special, with views of the Cathedral of Football adding a unique touch. We recommend booking a table in advance, as it is a very popular place.

Complete the experience by discovering what makes Athletic Club a team that is ‘unique in the world’ with a visit to the interior of San Mamés and the red-&-white team’s museum, AC Museoa.

The museum houses more than 1,000 objects, from historic shirts to trophies, and offers numerous interactive initiatives. The stadium tour takes you through the players’ tunnel, the changing rooms, the press room and the presidential box, offering a great family outing in Bilbao.

6. Nearby beaches and getaways

Although Bilbao does not have a beach, the city is just over half an hour away from spectacular sandy beaches such as Sopela, Plentzia and Gorliz. These beaches are perfect for a day of sun, surfing or relaxing by the sea. What’s more, you can easily get there by underground metro.

You can also visit the nearby town of Getxo, with its impressive suspension bridge (El Puente Colgante) and elegant mansions.
