Bilbao Low-cost: A budget guide to 12 inexpensive ways to enjoy the city without spending a fortune

Many people think that visiting a city as modern and famous as Bilbao requires a bulging wallet, but nothing could be further from the truth. Enjoying the city doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg if you know where to go. On the contrary: the real Bilbao, the one you experience in the streets and neighbourhoods, is surprisingly affordable. In this guide to Bilbao on a Budget, I suggest 12 things to do to get the most out of the city, from avant- garde art to the roar of San Mamés stadium, spending very little (or even nothing).

1. Museums that won’t break the bank

Bilbao breathes culture, but you don’t always have to pay a hefty entrance fee to enjoy it. You can consult this complete list of museums to visit in Bilbao to plan your cultural route.

  • The Museum of Fine Arts: this is a real gem where Goya, El Greco and Francis Bacon await you. The best tip for your low-cost Bilbao route? On Wednesdays, admission is free. As a new feature, you can now also enjoy the museum for free after 6 pm, regardless of the day of the week. It’s the perfect time to lose yourself in its display rooms without worrying about your wallet.
  • The Guggenheim Museum: although general admission has its price, Gehry’s architecture is a spectacle that can be enjoyed for free from the outside. Admire Puppy and Maman the spider without spending a penny. If you decide to go inside, the Bono Artean pass allows you to visit the Fine Arts Museum and the Guggenheim, saving you a significant amount of money with this bonus package.

2. The historic heart: the Seven Streets

Strolling through the Old Town is the best low-cost plan in Bilbao. This labyrinth of streets, founded in the 14th century, tells the story of the city at every corner. Don’t miss the Plaza Nueva (neoclassical and always bustling with life) or the stairs leading up to the Basilica of Begoña. It’s free, it’s authentic, and it will give you the best photos of your trip.

3. San Mamés: the heartbeat of the city

You can’t say you’ve been here if you haven’t felt the soul of Athletic. If you can’t afford a match ticket, don’t worry. You can visit the Athletic Club Museum to understand why we are a unique club in the world.

  • Smart plan: book the San Mamés Tour with an audio guide. It’s cheaper than theguided tour and allows you to step out onto the pitch and see the changing rooms atyour own pace.

4. A green oasis in Doña Casilda

This is the green lung of the city centre. It’s the ideal place to sit down with a book or let the children run around near the duck pond. Free concerts and events are often organised here, so keep an eye on the local calendar because there’s always something interesting going on.

5. La Ribera Market: A feast for the eyes

It is free to enter Europe’s largest covered market. Strolling among its fresh fish stalls and soaking up the morning hustle and bustle is a 100% Bilbao experience.

  • Eating on a budget: in the area around the market, “poteo” (bar-hopping) is sacred. A glass of wine and a Gilda (our most popular pintxo) will cost you very little and make you feel like a local.

6. Picture-perfect views in Artxanda

Take the Artxanda Funicular. For the price of a public transport ticket, you’ll have the whole of Bilbao at your feet. It’s the ideal place for a picnic with views of the skyline and the imposing San Mamés Stadium.

7. The Nervion River estuary and the Naval History

Walk along the banks of the tidal Nervión River until you reach the Maritime Museum. Outside, you can admire the legendary Carola Crane without paying an entrance fee. It’s a walk that combines the nostalgia of the shipyards with modern architecture. If you like hiking, the Green Belt offers free routes with spectacular views of the city.

8. The Suspension Bridge: A World Heritage Site

Take the underground to Portugalete. The Vizcaya Bridge is a marvel from 1893 that is a must see. Crossing in its suspended gondola costs just a few cents and the views from the Getxo pier on the other side are amazing. A must in any budget guide and, without a doubt, one of the top 10 places to see in Bilbao and its surroundings.

9. Street Art: a museum without walls

Bilbao has become more colourful in recent years. Neighbourhoods such as Bilbo Zaharra hide incredible murals by international artists. All you need is a map on your mobile phone and the desire to walk to discover these works of urban art completely free of charge.

10. Azkuna Zentroa: much more than a building

The old Alhóndiga is a place that will leave you speechless. Its 43 columns, all different, are a sight to behold. You can enter for free, visit its exhibitions or simply look up to see the glass bottom of its suspended swimming pool.

11. Coastal Getaway by Bizkaibus

Fancy a trip to the sea? No need to hire a car. Take a Bizkaibus and, for very little money, you can head to Mundaka or Laga beach. It’s the perfect plan to feel the salt air of the Cantabrian Sea breeze and get away from the city at very low cost.

12. Pintxos: fine Dining in Miniature

Don’t leave without exploring the bars in the Old Town or Calle Ledesma. Pintxos are the cheapest and most enjoyable way to try typical Basque dishes. Look for bars where you see groups of lifelong Bilbao locals; that’s where the quality and price never disappoint.

Tips for saving money like a local:

  • La Barik card is your best friend: it’s the transport card. Use it on the underground, tram and bus to get almost half price on every journey.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask: if you don’t know where to eat well and cheaply, ask anyBilbao local. We’ll be delighted to point you to the bar with the best set menu in the area.
  • Free events: check the City Council website. There are always music festivals, street theatre or craft markets with free admission.

Bilbao awaits you with open arms and plans for all budgets. And if you still have someenergy left, stop by the official stadium store; taking home a red-&-white souvenir is the best way to end your trip.
