5 plans to do as a family in Bilbao

The capital of Bizkaia has numerous attractions and places to visit. We suggest these 5 things to do with the family in Bilbao to make the most of your stay in the city.

Family plans in Bilbao

There are a large number of possible things to do with the family in Bilbao. Out of all of them, we suggest these 5.

Artxanda Funicular

More than 100 years after the Artxanda funicular began operating, it is still a must when it comes to family plans in Bilbao.

On the one hand, the little ones can enjoy an incomparable journey in a unique means of transport. On the other hand, thanks to this funicular you can quickly and easily reach the top of Mount Artxanda and thus have the excellent views of the city of Bilbao at your fingertips.

The Artxanda funicular is a rack railway that runs every day, linking Bilbao’s Plaza del Funicular with the top of Mount Artxanda. A route up the slope that ends next to a large lookout, which in turn is surrounded by green areas and a children’s play area.

Guggenheim Museum

One of the flagships of Bilbao of the present and the future, the Guggenheim Museum combines an outstanding artistic collection, which deserves to be visited with time and calm, together with the spectacular building and surroundings.

In these surroundings you will find the flowery Puppy dog by Jeff Koons, located in front of the entrance, which will amaze the little ones, the Mama spider, by Louise Bourgeois, at the back of the building, and the Tulips, also by Koons, located on the balcony of the museum.

Inside, meanwhile, the colossal labyrinth of Richard Serra’s Matter of Time is a real eye-catcher for children. A visit to the Guggenheim Museum is an essential attraction in the capital of Bizkaia.

Stroll along the river

Between March and December you can take a boat trip along the Nervión with the Bilboats Company.

Thanks to this trip you can appreciate from the waters of the estuary the great urban transformation that Bilbao has undergone in recent decades, reflected in such emblematic buildings as the Iberdrola Tower, the Guggenheim Museum and San Mamés.

A voyage lasting around an hour that is one of the best things to do with the family in Bilbao.

The Hanging Bridge

This Suspension Bridge which is popularly known in Bizkaia as the Hanging Bridge (Puente Colgante), joins the towns of Portugalete and Getxo, located on the left and right banks of the Nervión river.

It was the first ferry bridge built in the world with a metal structure, and was inaugurated on 28 July 1893.

This architectural work of great beauty has been declared a “World Heritage Site” by Unesco.

AC Museoa and San Mamés Tour

Last year in 2023, more than 125,000 people visited the AC Museoa, the Athletic Club Museum. A compendium of objects and original pieces from all times that allow visitors to delve into the more than 125 years of Athletic Club.

An essential visit if you are in Bilbao. Just like the San Mamés Tour, which allows you to experience football from the inside and in an incomparable stadium, La Catedral, recognised by several awards as the best sports building in the world.

And now you can experience it all with AC Virtual Adventure, a 100% immersive and interactive experience through virtual reality glasses and movement sensors. Thanks to this, the fan can enter the virtual red & white universe.

An experience that is the culmination of the San Mamés Tour and the visit to the AC Museoa. Get your ticket now and immerse yourself in the Athletic Club universe!
