Let us tell you how the legend of Athletic player Rafael Moreno Aranzadi, better known as Pichichi, was forged, the man who gave his name to the trophy awarded to LaLiga’s top scorer<\/p> Over the years, many terms have originated in the world of football, giving their name to hobbies, songs and trophies, among others. This is true of \u201calir\u00f3n<\/strong>\u201d or the Pichichi Trophy<\/strong>, but who was Pichichi? Every football fan knows that the word\u201cPichichi\u201d refers to the player who scores the most goals during the Spanish LaLiga<\/strong><\/a> and that it is an honorary distinction that is awarded every year. However, not everyone knows who Pichichi, a charismatic Athletic Club player, was.<\/p>\r\n

Who was Pichichi and what was his story?<\/h2>\r\n

Pichichi, as Rafael Moreno Aranzadi was known,was born in Bilbao on May 23, 1892, nephew of the well-known writer from Bilbao Miguel de Unamuno<\/strong><\/a>. The nickname would be given to him by his brother Raimundo, due to his short stature, without knowing that he would be one of the most mentioned in the world of football. Beyond his biographical details, Pichichi was Athletic Club\u2019s inside left and scored the first goal in the San Mam\u00e9s stadium<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>which was inaugurated on August 21, 1913 against Racing de Ir\u00fan. But this was not the only thing about him of note.<\/p>\r\n

6 things you should know about Pichichi<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n
  1. His first official game <\/strong>was against Real Madrid and ended in a 3 – 0 victory, two of which were scored by Pichichi in the first eleven minutes of the match.<\/li>\r\n
  2. In the final of La Copa in 1915, he scored a <\/strong>hat-trick<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\r\n
  3. He used to play with a white handkerchief tied around his head.<\/li>\r\n
  4. In total, he scored 83 goals in 89 matches <\/strong>between the regional Championship and La Copa.<\/li>\r\n
  5. After his retirement at the age of 29, he became a football referee<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n
  6. The exact reason for his death is unknown <\/strong>a year after becoming a referee and before he turned 30, but it is believed that it was due to eating bad oysters.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>

    In short, he was one of the best goal scorers of his day<\/strong>. In 1953, the Marca sports newspaper<\/strong><\/a> created the award for the highest scorer in LaLiga <\/strong>and, when the time came to name the trophy, they thought of one of the most emblematic players of the first quarter of the 20th century, Rafael Moreno Aranzadi \u201cPichichi\u201d. A well-deserved recognition that is still valid today.
